Coutain Brings Sangre Grande’s Sound Into Billboard’s Caribbean Spotlight

Trinidadian soca artist Coutain is receiving a new wave of international attention after being named Billboard’s Caribbean Up-and-Comer for September 2026, following a year marked by new music, major touring opportunities and growing recognition for his blend of soca, dancehall, reggae and R&B.

Born Denzil Coutain and raised in Sangre Grande, Trinidad, the singer has spent the past several years developing a sound that moves between contemporary Caribbean styles while drawing heavily on Trinidad and Tobago’s musical history.

His recent run has included collaborations with Trinidadian producer Michael “Tano” Montano, with whom he released “Junction” in 2024 and “Jamtown” in 2025.

According to Luminate data cited by Billboard, “Jamtown” has generated nearly two million official on-demand streams in the United States.

For Coutain, the record represented a deliberate attempt to approach soca differently. He told Billboard that his musical influences lean heavily towards dancehall and that he wanted “Jamtown” to move beyond a conventional party record while drawing inspiration from figures including Black Stalin and Lord Nelson.

The song took almost two months to complete, with Coutain and Tano working through three versions before settling on the final recording.

Coutain’s connection to Trinidadian musical history also features prominently in “Wedding Band”, released in December 2025. The song reinterprets Mighty Sparrow’s “Mr. Walker”, placing the older calypso reference inside a contemporary soca production.

The track became part of Coutain’s live repertoire during his opening performances for Kes the Band’s Roots, Rock, Soca Tour this year.

Coutain described the experience to Billboard as significant, particularly because of what he learned about the organisation behind a large-scale touring operation. He said the tour reinforced the importance of discipline and having a team in which each person understands their role.

That experience has also informed how he is approaching the next stage of his career.

Coutain is preparing his debut solo studio album, although a release date has not been announced. Asked by Billboard when the next project could arrive, he said he hoped it would be released after Carnival.

The album will follow a catalogue that includes Product of Big Blood, released in 2020, G Syde Tape, Pt. 3, a 2022 project made with Brooklyn Decent, and the Dwala-assisted 1996, released in 2024.

The singer has also received recognition through the 2026 Caribbean Music Awards, where he earned three nominations, including Best New Soca Artist.

Billboard’s profile places that progress within a broader conversation about Trinidadian music and the artists developing the genre beyond its established names.

Coutain has identified several other emerging Trinidadian musicians he believes deserve greater international attention, including Kilu, Kimi, Christo, Jimmy October, MelaCaribe, Kman 6ixx, Medz Boss, Teflon and Annalie Prime.

For Coutain, the ambitions extend beyond personal success. He told Billboard that one of his long-term goals is to help create opportunities for the generation coming behind him and demonstrate the depth of talent within the Caribbean.

For now, his next major milestone remains the forthcoming album. Its release date is still unconfirmed, but Coutain enters the next phase of his career with a growing catalogue, a major tour experience and fresh attention from one of the music industry’s most prominent publications.
