The rapper surrendered to police, pleaded not guilty and was released on $5,000 bond as he faces charges stemming from an alleged August altercation.
Rick Ross was arrested in Miami Beach on Thursday on domestic-violence charges after a woman accused the rapper of repeatedly striking her and restricting her breathing during an alleged altercation at his home.
Ross, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts II, voluntarily surrendered to Miami Beach police early Thursday and was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 6:10 a.m.
He faces one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery. The charges stem from an alleged incident at Ross’s Star Island residence on August 28 that was reported to police about a month later.
According to the arrest affidavit, the woman told investigators that she had been in a relationship with Ross for about a year and that they had been living together. She alleged that an argument began after Ross became angry about her being tagged in an Instagram photograph.
The woman told police that Ross allegedly slapped her and later struck her several times in the chest. She also alleged that he restricted her breathing by grabbing and twisting the collar of the hoodie she was wearing.
The affidavit further alleges that Ross grabbed the woman’s ponytail and slammed her against a wall before striking her in the face, causing a split lip. She later provided investigators with photographs that police said documented injuries connected to her account.
Police also reviewed surveillance footage from the property as part of the investigation.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
Ross has denied them.
After leaving jail Thursday, the rapper told reporters that he was “totally innocent” and described the allegations as fabricated.
“I am totally innocent of these fabricated allegations made against me,” Ross said.
His attorney, Bradley Horenstein, also rejected the allegations and urged the public to allow the case to proceed through the courts.
Ross appeared by video in Miami-Dade bond court Thursday. His attorney entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.
Judge Mindy Glazer set Ross’s bond at $5,000 and ordered him to have no direct or indirect contact with the alleged victim. The judge also imposed additional conditions, including restrictions involving firearms while the case is pending.
Ross was released from custody later Thursday.
His arraignment is scheduled for October 22.
The arrest marks a significant legal development for one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary hip-hop. Ross rose to prominence with his 2006 debut single, “Hustlin’,” and his debut album, Port of Miami, which opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
He later founded Maybach Music Group and built a career that has included 12 studio albums, multiple Grammy nominations and collaborations with some of the biggest names in hip-hop.
His latest album, Set In Stone, was released in July.
For now, the case remains before the courts. Ross has pleaded not guilty and maintains that the accusations against him are false. The allegations will be addressed through the legal process as the case moves toward its October 22 arraignment.
