Keanu Reeves’ action franchise gets another streaming push as Lionsgate develops new stories beyond the original four films
The John Wick franchise is back in the spotlight as all four films in the main series become available on Prime Video, while Lionsgate continues to expand the world created by Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski.
John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4 are among the titles joining Prime Video’s October lineup, giving viewers the opportunity to revisit the franchise from its 2014 beginning through the latest main installment.
The timing comes as the studio develops several new projects connected to the John Wick universe.
One of the most significant is Caine, a spinoff centred on the character played by Donnie Yen in John Wick: Chapter 4. Yen is returning as Caine and is also directing the film, which follows the assassin after the events of the fourth movie.
Production on Caine began earlier this year and wrapped in July, moving the project into post-production.
Rina Sawayama is also returning as Akira, while the cast includes Mason Thames and Dacre Montgomery. The film is being developed as another chapter in the expanding John Wick universe rather than a continuation centred on Reeves’ character.
Reeves’ John Wick, however, is not finished as a character.
Lionsgate has announced John Wick: Chapter 5, with Reeves returning and Stahelski involved. The project remains in development, and the studio has indicated that it will come after other planned projects in the franchise. No release date has been announced.
That places Caine among the next major pieces of the franchise’s expansion.
The strategy represents a shift from a series built primarily around one central assassin to a broader universe populated by characters who have already been introduced around him.
That expansion began with Ballerina, the Ana de Armas-led spinoff released in 2025, and has continued with the development of Caine. Lionsgate is also pursuing an animated prequel as part of the wider franchise plans.
The original John Wick arrived in cinemas in 2014 with a relatively straightforward premise: a retired assassin returns to the criminal underworld after the killing of his dog, a final gift from his late wife.
What followed was a mythology built around the High Table, an international network governing an elaborate world of assassins, contracts and strict rules.
Each subsequent film expanded that mythology while increasing the scale of the action.
By John Wick: Chapter 4, the franchise had become one of Hollywood’s major modern action properties, with Reeves’ performance and the series’ highly choreographed fight sequences at its centre.
The renewed availability of the four main films now gives audiences a chance to revisit that progression while the next generation of John Wick stories takes shape.
For Lionsgate, the franchise is no longer limited to a single film series. Its expanding slate now includes spinoffs, animation and other projects designed to develop the mythology beyond John Wick himself.
And while Reeves’ return in Chapter 5 remains part of the studio’s plans, the immediate future of the franchise is increasingly moving toward characters such as Caine.
For audiences returning to the Continental and the world of the High Table, the original four films are once again readily accessible — just as the next chapter of the John Wick universe begins taking shape.
