Actress Camryn Manheim has drawn attention after remarks she made about her son, actor Milo Manheim, during the Human Rights Campaign’s 2026 National Dinner in Washington, D.C.

Manheim appeared at the September 26 event to present actress Marcia Gay Harden with the HRC’s Ally for Equality Award. The award recognized Harden for her public support of LGBTQ+ equality.

During her introduction, Manheim spoke about Harden’s three children and their connection to the LGBTQ+ community before turning to her own experience as a mother.

“I always wanted a gay son,” Manheim said, according to recordings and reports of the speech.

She went on to joke about her son’s childhood, referring to photographs of him wearing high heels and appearing in drag. Manheim also referenced his knowledge of musical theatre and joked that, despite what she had expected, he became the straight man in his musical-theatre company.

Manheim also recalled a conversation with Harden after Harden told her that one of her children had come out as gay. Manheim said she responded by telling Harden that she was “lucky,” continuing the humorous tone of her remarks.

The comments have since circulated widely online, prompting discussion about Manheim’s remarks and the way parents and celebrities publicly discuss their children’s sexuality.

Milo Manheim, Manheim’s only child, is 25 and is known for playing Zed in Disney’s Zombies franchise. He also competed on Dancing With the Stars, finishing as the runner-up in the show’s 27th season.

Manheim’s comments came during an evening centered on LGBTQ+ advocacy and recognition. The HRC National Dinner also featured Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer as keynote speaker, while Harden, André De Shields and Junior LaBeija were among those honored.

The remarks have become one of the more widely discussed moments from this year’s event, with clips of Manheim’s speech circulating across social media.

Neither Manheim nor Milo Manheim has announced any new development connected to the discussion surrounding the remarks.

The story remains developing as the comments continue to circulate online.
