Frassdon Rebrands As Sovereignty As Artist Turns Towards Roots Reggae

The Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist has adopted a new stage name ahead of his forthcoming album, Wake Up Call.

Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist Frassdon has changed his stage name to Sovereignty, marking a new phase in his music as he shifts his focus from dancehall towards conscious roots reggae.

The artist announced the name change on September 25 as he prepares to release his 16-track album, Wake Up Call, later this year.

Sovereignty said the name reflects a period of personal and creative growth. He described Frassdon as representing an earlier chapter of youthful energy, while Sovereignty is intended to reflect his interest in spiritual awareness, self-determination and purposeful songwriting.

“The name Sovereignty represents self-rule, spiritual autonomy and reclaiming divine authority over one’s mind, body and destiny,” he said.

Wake Up Call will be led by his previously released single, We Are, with two additional singles planned ahead of the album’s release.

The project is being produced in collaboration with Bylavibe Production and Studio Yard Music. According to Sovereignty, the album will combine contemporary roots reggae with live horns, organic drum patterns, traditional percussion and prominent basslines.

Its themes will include resilience, truth, love, spiritual awareness and community empowerment.

Sovereignty also acknowledged the influence of his dancehall background on his development as an artist.

“Dancehall provided foundational training in rhythm, cadence and crowd control, but roots reggae offers the depth and space needed for social commentary, spiritual elevation and lasting messages,” he said.

The album is expected to feature a collaboration with roots reggae artist Loyal Flames, alongside another emerging artist associated with the current cultural revival.

Sovereignty plans to release Wake Up Call independently with global digital distribution. A limited vinyl pressing is also expected to accompany the project.

While his musical direction is changing, the artist said elements of his previous identity will remain in his work, including the vocal delivery and rhythmic approach associated with the Frassdon name.

“The edge remains intact, but the energy is now being redirected towards social uplift, conscious reflection and substance,” he said.

The forthcoming album will mark Sovereignty’s first major release under his new name and will introduce the direction he intends to pursue as he moves further into roots reggae.
