Malie Donn has made an immediate impression in the US with his debut studio album, The Golden Child, which reached No. 2 on Apple Music’s US Reggae Albums chart within its first day of release.
The chart position puts the Jamaican dancehall artist ahead of Masicka’s Forever Reign on the US ranking, giving Donn one of the more notable early chart results for a new-generation dancehall act this year. DancehallMag and the Jamaica Observer both reported the placement following the album’s September 4 release.
Released through VP Records, The Golden Child contains 21 tracks and arrives after several years in which Donn has steadily expanded his audience through singles including “Van Cleef”, “Vancleef Pt 2” and “Holiday”. Apple Music lists the project as his latest release and classifies it under Modern Dancehall.
The early US performance is notable because the album is not simply competing within Jamaica’s dancehall market. Its first-day positioning on an American streaming platform places Donn’s latest work in front of an international audience and provides an early indication of the market beyond Jamaica.
The album’s release also comes during a period of increased attention around Donn. Earlier this month, Apple Music placed him on the cover of its Reggae playlist, while Billboard named him its Caribbean Up-and-Comer of the Month for August.
The Golden Child includes appearances from dancehall artists including Squash, Byron Messia, Antuwang and Javo Donn. Its tracklist moves between contemporary dancehall and trap-influenced production, reflecting the sound that has become increasingly associated with the younger generation of Jamaican artists.
For Donn, however, the No. 2 position is only an opening-day result. The more consequential measure will be whether The Golden Child can maintain its position as the album moves beyond its first week and whether the initial US attention translates into sustained streams and a broader international audience.
For a dancehall scene increasingly looking beyond Jamaica for growth, that is the part worth watching.
