The influential musician helped shape major R&B recordings by Mariah Carey, Usher, Alicia Keys and other artists.
Manuel Seal, the Grammy-winning songwriter, producer and musician whose work helped shape some of the most recognizable R&B records of the 1990s and 2000s, has died at 66.
The news was announced by longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri, who paid tribute to Seal on Sunday, September 27. Dupri described Seal as the first person to truly understand him musically and credited him with helping shape the sound associated with So So Def.
A cause of death had not been publicly disclosed as of Monday, September 28.
Seal was a Chicago native who became an important figure in the songwriting and production community surrounding Atlanta’s So So Def era. Working as a songwriter, producer, musician and vocalist, he contributed to records spanning R&B, hip-hop and pop.
His credits included some of the biggest songs of the period.
Seal co-wrote Mariah Carey’s 1995 hit “Always Be My Baby” and later worked with Carey, Dupri and Johntá Austin on “We Belong Together,” one of the defining songs from Carey’s 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi.
The Recording Academy credits Seal as a songwriter on “We Belong Together” and lists him among the song’s producers. The track won Best R&B Song at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in 2006. Seal was also part of the songwriting team nominated for Song of the Year for the same recording.
His association with Usher was equally significant. Seal contributed to Usher’s breakthrough 1997 album My Way, including the hit singles “You Make Me Wanna…” and “Nice & Slow.”
He also co-wrote “My Boo,” Usher’s 2004 duet with Alicia Keys, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song. The Recording Academy lists Seal among the song’s writers alongside Dupri, Keys, Usher and Adonis Shropshire.
Beyond Carey and Usher, Seal’s credits extended to artists including TLC, Xscape, Da Brat, Janet Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Destiny’s Child and others.
He was particularly connected to the early development of So So Def’s musical identity. Dupri’s tribute reflected the depth of their creative partnership, describing Seal as someone who could understand his ideas and help translate them into music.
“Today I lost the first person to really understand me musically,” Dupri wrote in his tribute, according to reports.
The Recording Academy lists Seal with one Grammy win and six nominations. His nominations included Album of the Year for Mariah Carey’s Daydream and The Emancipation of Mimi, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “We Belong Together,” and Best R&B Song for both “We Belong Together” and “My Boo.”
Although Seal often worked away from the spotlight occupied by the artists performing his songs, his contributions were embedded in a generation of commercially successful R&B records.
His death leaves behind a catalogue that connects some of the genre’s most recognizable voices and songs, as well as a lasting creative partnership with Dupri that helped define an important chapter in Atlanta’s music history.
