Spotify Users Report Disruptions as Streaming Service Investigates Outage

Spotify users are reporting widespread problems with the music-streaming service on Tuesday, September 29, as the company investigates a technical disruption affecting parts of its platform.

More than 17,000 users in the United States had reported problems with Spotify through outage-tracking service Downdetector by 10:12 a.m. ET, according to Reuters. The number of reports continued to fluctuate as more users encountered problems.

Spotify acknowledged the disruption through its official status account on X, saying it was aware of issues and was investigating. The company had not identified the cause of the disruption or provided a timetable for a full restoration at the time of reporting.

Users have reported difficulties with several parts of the service, including accessing the app, searching for music, logging in and playing songs. Reports suggest that the disruption is not affecting every user or feature in the same way.

Some users have reported that previously available playlists or music continue to work while search and other online functions fail. Others have encountered connection problems or have been unable to load Spotify altogether.

Reports have also appeared outside the United States, including in other international markets. However, Spotify has not confirmed that the incident constitutes a worldwide outage, making the full geographic scope of the disruption unclear.

Downdetector’s figures are based on reports submitted by users and should not be interpreted as the total number of Spotify customers affected. Reuters noted that the actual number of affected users may differ.

The disruption comes as Spotify remains one of the world’s largest music-streaming platforms, meaning service interruptions can quickly affect listeners, artists and other users who rely on the platform for music distribution and discovery.

Spotify has not yet publicly disclosed what caused Tuesday’s problems.

The situation remains developing as the company works to investigate and restore affected services.
