Ukraine launched one of its largest reported drone assaults on Russian territory on Sunday, striking targets across several regions as Moscow simultaneously carried out missile and drone attacks against Ukraine, according to Reuters and The Associated Press.
The Ukrainian operation reached the Moscow region, where Russian authorities reported widespread drone activity, damage and casualties. Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man was killed in Podolsk and several people were injured. A warehouse belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries was also damaged in a strike that sparked a major fire.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces intercepted 822 Ukrainian drones across the country, including approximately 600 that it said were directed toward the Moscow region. That figure comes from Russian authorities and has not been independently verified by Reuters. AP, however, separately reported the same Russian claim while documenting casualties and damage from the attacks.
The attacks were not confined to the Moscow area. AP reported that strikes in Russia’s Rostov region killed five people and damaged homes and other infrastructure. The reported fatalities bring the number of people killed in the Russian attacks to at least six, according to AP’s account.
Moscow Comes Under Fire as Kyiv Faces Another Night of Attacks
The escalation unfolded alongside another Russian aerial assault on Ukraine.
Reuters reported that Russian forces launched missile and drone attacks on Kyiv during the early hours of Sunday. Explosions were heard by Reuters witnesses, while debris from the attacks triggered fires in at least two districts of the capital. Three people were reported injured in Kyiv, with additional injuries reported in the wider Kyiv region.
The latest exchange illustrates the increasingly broad geographical reach of the war, with Ukraine continuing to strike targets deep inside Russian territory while Russia maintains intensive aerial attacks against Ukrainian cities.
AP described Sunday’s Ukrainian operation as one of the largest aerial assaults of the war. The agency reported that Ukraine deployed hundreds of drones across Russia while Russian forces continued their attacks on Ukraine.
A War Increasingly Defined by Long-Range Strikes
The latest attacks come after Ukraine intensified its use of long-range weapons against Russian military and industrial targets.
AP reported that Ukraine carried out another large-scale strike on Russia’s Samara region on August 15, targeting industrial infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the operation involved domestically developed Flamingo missiles and targeted strategic Russian sites. Those claims have not been independently verified in full.
The pattern reflects a broader Ukrainian strategy of attempting to impose costs on Russian military and industrial infrastructure far from the front line. Russia, meanwhile, continues to use missiles and drones against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The result is a conflict increasingly extending beyond the immediate battlefield, with civilians and critical infrastructure on both sides exposed to attacks.
What Comes Next
Sunday’s escalation does not, by itself, establish that the war has entered a fundamentally new phase. But the scale of the reported drone operation and the continuing Russian attacks demonstrate how both sides are relying heavily on long-range aerial warfare.
For civilians, the consequences remain immediate.
Homes, warehouses, transportation facilities and other infrastructure have been damaged, while casualties have been reported in both countries.
As Russia and Ukraine continue to expand their ability to strike at greater distances, the latest attacks underscore a central reality of the conflict: the battlefield is no longer confined to the areas closest to the front.
